Kroger Frozen Vegetable Recall 2023: What to Know

Frozen vegetables sold at Kroger, Food Lion and Safeway stores nationwide were recalled because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infection in older adults.

The recall was issued by the manufacturer, Twin City Foods of Stanwood, Washington, because a customer provided third-party lab results for one of the frozen sweet cut corn products that indicated that it might be contaminated with the germ.

The recalled products were sold under each retailer’s store brand with “best by” dates ranging from February 2024 to January 2025.

Shoppers who purchased the recalled products are urged not to eat them and immediately return the items to the store where they were purchased for a full refund.

Any questions regarding this recall can be directed to the manufacturer, Twin City Foods, at 360-629-5678 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET.

There have been no reports to date of any listeria infections or illnesses resulting from eating the recalled products, according to the manufacturer.

Listeriosis, the infection caused by eating food contaminated with the Listeria monocytogenes bacteria, may cause serious and sometimes fatal illness in people 65 and older and those with weakened immune systems. Pregnant women and newborns are also at risk of serious infection.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says listeriosis can come with a range of symptoms, including:

Pregnant women usually experience only fever, fatigue and muscle aches. However, listeriosis can lead to premature birth or pregnancy loss and can cause serious illness or death in newborns. Anyone who experiences symptoms of severe listeria illness should call their health care provider.

About 1,600 people in the U.S. get listeriosis each year, resulting in an average of 260 deaths, the CDC estimates. Americans 65 and older are four times as likely as others to get a listeria infection.
