Cafe Usagi Tokyo is a Japanese dessert cafe selling mochi ice cream, daifuku & more

Apr 11, 2024

If sipping tea and nibbling on desserts is your idea of a perfect leisurely afternoon, why have you yet to visit Cafe Usagi Tokyo in Suntec City?

It is the Year of the Rabbit (Usagi is “rabbit” in Japanese) after all, and this modern Japanese cafe is here to sweeten the deal with its array of dainty Japanese desserts, teas, and more.

The cafe is perhaps best known for the one dessert that’s been going viral all over social media — mochi ice cream.

Go for the Signature Mochi Ice Cream (S$6), comprising a scoop of ice cream (standard flavours are Vanilla and Matcha) encased in chewy mochi skin. Matcha fanatics like me must try the Honkaku Uji Matcha ice cream — well-balanced, bittersweet, and relatively gao (without being too concentrated).

However, there are plenty of other enticing Japanese Flavored Hand Crafted Ice Cream (from S$5) flavours to choose from, including the likes of Lavender Hojicha, Samurai Blue Sea Salt, and White Chocolate Macadamia.

You can enjoy your ice cream with Mochi Skin (S$1), or atop an Original Waffle with Kuromitsu or Maple Syrup ($6.50)

If mochi and fruits are up your alley, you’ll fall head over heels for the USAGI Strawberry Mochi (S$6.90), Cafe Usagi Tokyo’s take on the traditional Japanese sweet.

Think soft and chewy mochi stuffed with handmade Hokkaido azuki (red bean) paste and an entire fresh strawberry that was not only big but also sweet and fresh-tasting.

Daifuku is best accompanied by a pot of soothing hot tea with options like Rose Sencha (S$7.50), Lavender Hojicha (S$7.90), or the classic Sencha ($7.50).

But of course, it’s hard to say no to both the creamy, earthy, and full-bodied Matcha Latte (S$6.80) and Hojicha Latte (S$6.80). You can even customise your preferred sweetness levels here, which should definitely be offered at more cafes (and not just bubble tea shops) islandwide.

A second outlet will be opening at 111 Somerset very soon — with an expanded menu in the works, hopefully?

BRB, I’m heading over to get my hands on some daifuku and matcha right now.
